Cient\u00edficos de la Universidad Nacional Aut\u00f3noma de M\u00e9xico (UNAM) crearon un nuevo antiveneno eficaz contra las mordeduras de serpientes de distintas regiones del mundo, inform\u00f3 hoy la instituci\u00f3n a trav\u00e9s de un comunicado.<\/p>\n

El componente esencial es una mol\u00e9cula dise\u00f1ada por especialistas del Instituto de Biotecnolog\u00eda, la cual es capaz de neutralizar las toxinas de diferentes serpientes, seg\u00fan los exitosos resultados que se obtuvieron de las pruebas realizadas en ratones.<\/p>\n

La mol\u00e9cula respondi\u00f3 positivamente contra el veneno de distintas serpientes, como la Micrurus surinamensis -que vive principalmente en Suram\u00e9rica-, algunas cobras y mambas africanas y serpientes de Oriente Medio y Asia, especialmente la llamada cobra de la India, que se estima causa la muerte de 50.000 personas al a\u00f1o.<\/p>\n

Esta creaci\u00f3n llev\u00f3 al l\u00edder de la investigaci\u00f3n, Guillermo de la Rosa, a recibir el \u201cPremio Rosenkranz en Biotecnolog\u00eda 2018\u201d que otorga la Fundaci\u00f3n Mexicana para la Salud (Funsalud) y la farmac\u00e9utica Roche.<\/p>\n

El veneno de las serpientes es una mezcla de muchas toxinas, de las cuales solo algunas son relevantes para que ocurra la muerte de un individuo.<\/p>\n

De la Rosa precis\u00f3 que, a diferencia de los sueros comerciales, en los que se utiliza todo el veneno de la serpiente, en el desarrollado por la UNAM solo se usa una sola mol\u00e9cula que atrapa las toxinas importantes.<\/p>\n

\u201cEste desarrollo puede acercarnos a un antiveneno universal, utilizando solamente una o varias toxinas clave. En t\u00e9rminos de costos, podr\u00edamos llegar a un producto m\u00e1s barato para los productores y los usuarios\u201d, destac\u00f3 el cient\u00edfico.<\/p>\n

La UNAM cuenta con la patente de la mol\u00e9cula, ya lista para ser transferida a laboratorios interesados.<\/p>\n

Seg\u00fan la Organizaci\u00f3n Mundial de la Salud (OMS), las mordeduras de serpiente son un problema desatendido en pa\u00edses tropicales y subtropicales.<\/p>\n

Las estimaciones indican que cada a\u00f1o se registran 5,4 millones de mordeduras, las cuales son la causa de entre 81.000 y 137.000 muertes y de aproximadamente el triple de amputaciones y otras discapacidades permanentes.
\nEn Am\u00e9rica existen dos familias de serpientes venenosas, las v\u00edboras y los el\u00e1pidos.<\/p>\n

Es por ello que los antivenenos dise\u00f1ados para las v\u00edboras no son siempre eficaces al tratar a alguien mordido por un el\u00e1pido, por lo que suelen emplearse dosis muy altas para que funcionen.<\/p>\n

El veneno de estas serpientes impacta en los m\u00fasculos de la v\u00edctima, que queda inmoviliza y ve c\u00f3mo se le cierran los p\u00e1rpados.<\/p>\n

Los m\u00fasculos clave en la respiraci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n se trastocan, muriendo el individuo de fallo respiratorio.<\/p>\n
