Actualmente, la mayor\u00eda de las tecnolog\u00edas s\u00f3lo captan la luz visible, lo que significa que el resto del espectro se desperdicia. <!--more-->Ahora, investigadores del Laboratorio Nacional Lawrence Berkeley han desarrollado una forma de usar\u00a0<strong>nanopart\u00edculas recubiertas de colorantes org\u00e1nicos especiales para aprovechar la luz infrarroja<\/strong>, lo que podr\u00eda permitir a las c\u00e9lulas solares ampliar el espectro y ser m\u00e1s eficientes, se trabaja para duplicar su eficiencia.<\/p>\n<p>Las part\u00edculas conocidas como nanopart\u00edculas de conversi\u00f3n ascendente (UCNPs), contienen iones met\u00e1licos de lant\u00e1nidos como el\u00a0<strong>iterbio y el erbio<\/strong>.El iterbio absorbe la luz infrarroja y la env\u00eda al erbio,que lo devuelve como luz verde visible. M\u00e1s tarde se descubri\u00f3 que si recubr\u00edan con un tinte org\u00e1nico las nanopart\u00edculas aumentaba su eficiencia.\u00a0El problema era que se degradaban r\u00e1pidamente al exponerlos a la luz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Los colorantes parec\u00edan degradarse casi inmediatamente despu\u00e9s de la exposici\u00f3n a la luz, y nadie sab\u00eda exactamente c\u00f3mo estaban interactuando los colorantes con la superficie de las nanopart\u00edculas<\/em>\u201c, dice Emory Chan, coautor principal del estudio.<\/p>\n<p>Ahora, los cient\u00edficos del Berkeley Lab afirman haber conseguido un proceso estable para dise\u00f1ar sistemas que funcionen mejor. Descubrieron que los lant\u00e1nidos en las part\u00edculas provocan que los tintes entren en un estado en el que pueden<strong>\u00a0unir varios fotones en un \u00fanico fot\u00f3n de luz visible<\/strong>, transfiriendo la energ\u00eda de los lant\u00e1nidos de manera m\u00e1s eficiente. Despu\u00e9s de aumentar la concentraci\u00f3n de lant\u00e1nidos en las part\u00edculas del 22 al 52 %, el equipo encontr\u00f3 que sus nuevos UCNP te\u00f1idos eran 33.000 veces m\u00e1s brillantes y 100 veces m\u00e1s eficientes de lo que ser\u00edan sin el tinte.<\/p>\n<p>Desafortunadamente, la desventaja es que los colorantes siguen siendo muy inestables \u2013 para estos experimentos, los investigadores tuvieron que mantenerlos en ambientes nitrogenados. Les queda el reto de desarrollar recubrimientos protectores para los UCNPs.<\/p>\n<p>Una vez que se hayan resuelto estos inconvenientes, el equipo dice que las part\u00edculas podr\u00edan usarse para fabricar c\u00e9lulas solares que puedan aprovechar m\u00e1s del espectro de luz.
