El complejo proceso de c\u00f3mo las ara\u00f1as viudas negras transforman las prote\u00ednas en fibras tan resistentes como el acero ha sido desentra\u00f1ado, abriendo la v\u00eda a nuevos tejidos igual de fuertes.<\/p>\n
Las viudas negras y sus parientes, nativas de climas templados en Am\u00e9rica del Norte, Europa, Asia, Australia, \u00c1frica y Am\u00e9rica del Sur, producen una variedad de sedas con propiedades de materiales excepcionales.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Los cient\u00edficos han sabido durante mucho tiempo la secuencia primaria de amino\u00e1cidos que forman algunas prote\u00ednas de la tela de ara\u00f1a y han entendido la estructura de las fibras y las redes. Investigaciones previas teorizaron que las prote\u00ednas de la seda de la ara\u00f1a esperan el proceso de hilado como micelas esf\u00e9ricas anfif\u00edlicas de tama\u00f1o nanom\u00e9trico (grupos de mol\u00e9culas solubles en agua y mol\u00e9culas no solubles) antes de ser canalizadas a trav\u00e9s del aparato de hilado de la ara\u00f1a para formar fibras de seda.<\/div>\n
Sin embargo, cuando los investigadores intentaron replicar este proceso, no pudieron crear materiales sint\u00e9ticos con las fortalezas y propiedades de las fibras nativas de la tela de ara\u00f1a.<\/p>\n
\u201cLa brecha de conocimiento estaba literalmente en el medio \u2013afirma en un comunicado Nathan C. Gianneschi de la Universidad Northwestern\u2013. Lo que no entendimos completamente es qu\u00e9 sucede en la nanoescala de las gl\u00e1ndulas de seda o el conducto de hilado: el proceso de almacenamiento, transformaci\u00f3n y transporte implicado en que las prote\u00ednas se conviertan en fibras\u201d.<\/p>\n
Gianneschi es profesor en el Departamento de Qu\u00edmica de la Facultad de Artes y Ciencias de Weinberg y en los departamentos de Ciencia e Ingenier\u00eda de Materiales y de Ingenier\u00eda Biom\u00e9dica en la Escuela de Ingenier\u00eda McCormick. Tanto \u00e9l como Gregory P. Holland, profesor asociado en el Departamento de Qu\u00edmica y Bioqu\u00edmica de SDSU, autor de m\u00e1s de 40 art\u00edculos sobre la tela de ara\u00f1a, son los autores correspondientes del art\u00edculo.<\/p>\n
Utilizando t\u00e9cnicas de vanguardia y complementarias, como la espectroscopia de resonancia magn\u00e9tica nuclear (RMN) \u2013la misma tecnolog\u00eda utilizada en la MRI\u2013, en SDSU, seguida de microscop\u00eda electr\u00f3nica en Northwestern, el equipo de investigaci\u00f3n pudo ver m\u00e1s de cerca la gl\u00e1ndula de prote\u00ednas donde se originan las fibras de seda, revelando un conjunto de prote\u00ednas jer\u00e1rquico mucho m\u00e1s complejo.<\/p>\n
Esta \u201cteor\u00eda de las micelas modificadas\u201d concluye que las prote\u00ednas de la tela de ara\u00f1a no comienzan como micelas esf\u00e9ricas simples, como se pensaba anteriormente, sino como micelas compuestas complejas. Esta estructura \u00fanica es potencialmente necesaria para crear las impresionantes fibras de la ara\u00f1a viuda negra.<\/p>\n
\u201cAhora sabemos que las sedas de la ara\u00f1a viuda negra se hilan de nano-ensamblajes jer\u00e1rquicos (de 200 a 500 nan\u00f3metros de di\u00e1metro) de prote\u00ednas almacenadas en el abdomen de la ara\u00f1a, en lugar de una soluci\u00f3n aleatoria de prote\u00ednas individuales o de part\u00edculas esf\u00e9ricas simples\u201d, afirma Holland, cuya investigaci\u00f3n se publica en la edici\u00f3n digital de esta semana de \u2018Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences\u2019.<\/p>\n
Si se duplican, \u201clas aplicaciones pr\u00e1cticas para un material como este son esencialmente ilimitadas\u201d, augura Holland, y podr\u00edan incluir textiles de alto rendimiento para militares, socorristas y atletas; materiales de construcci\u00f3n para puentes de cable y otras construcciones; sustitutos ecol\u00f3gicos para pl\u00e1sticos; y aplicaciones biom\u00e9dicas.<\/p>\n
