Se utiliza para transportar cantidades ingentes de informaci\u00f3n en tiempos cada vez menores. B\u00e1sicamente son los cables que hacen posible que exista internet y los centros de datos donde guardar todo lo que existe online.<span>\u00a0<\/span>Sus due\u00f1os son las grandes compa\u00f1\u00edas tecnol\u00f3gicas: Facebook, Google, Microsoft\u2026 Pero los primeros en utilizar este entramado para conectar al mundo fueron las empresas de telecomunicaciones, que siguen vali\u00e9ndose de \u00e9l para llevar la fibra \u00f3ptica a la mayor cantidad de lugares posible. Una investigaci\u00f3n de la universidad de Berkeley (California) ha descubierto un nuevo uso: tambi\u00e9n son \u00fatiles para detectar se\u00edsmos.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>La clave est\u00e1 en la fibra oscura, as\u00ed es como se denomina a los cables de fibra \u00f3ptica que ya no se utilizan. Seg\u00fan el departamento de Tierra y Ciencias de Medio Ambiente (EESA) del Laboratorio de Berkeley, podr\u00edan usarse como sensores para la actividad s\u00edsmica. Durante siete meses, los investigadores hicieron pruebas en un segmento de cable de Estados Unidos con el objetivo de mapear las vibraciones que ocurren bajo tierra.<\/p>\n<p>Consiguieron datos de ondas s\u00edsmicas de baja intensidad provocadas por terremotos que ocurrieron en zonas alejadas. \u00bfC\u00f3mo lo hacen? A trav\u00e9s de disparos de pulsos cortos de l\u00e1ser a lo largo de la fibra, as\u00ed es como miden los campos de ondas s\u00edsmicas.\u00a0Los movimientos de las fallas producen vibraciones en la fibra \u00f3ptica, lo que hace que parte de la luz del l\u00e1ser se disperse. Los investigadores analizaron cu\u00e1nta luz se pierde entre un punto y otro del cableado y as\u00ed pudieron detectar la magnitud del movimiento s\u00edsmico. Pero los investigadores aseguran que, aunque a\u00fan est\u00e1 en fase de pruebas, el uso de fibra oscura ha demostrado ser tambi\u00e9n eficiente. Una de las ventajas que tiene es que buena parte de la inversi\u00f3n en infraestructura ya est\u00e1 hecha. Bajo las aguas, hay m\u00e1s cables de los que se usan realmente. El proceso de ponerlos ah\u00ed abajo y transportarlos uniendo regiones lejanas es tan costoso que se ponen de m\u00e1s. Eso hace que a d\u00eda de hoy haya espacio libre para darles otros usos.<\/p>\n<p>Otras investigaciones apoyan estos resultados. En julio del a\u00f1o pasado, el Centro de Investigaci\u00f3n Alem\u00e1n de Geociencias GFZ public\u00f3 en la revista<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Science<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>otro estudio en el que se utilizaban cables submarinos para determinar la ubicaci\u00f3n de los terremotos. A diferencia del \u00faltimo estudio, esta aproximaci\u00f3n<span>\u00a0<\/span>utilizaba cables de fibra \u00f3ptica activos.
