Las tecnolog\u00edas de desalinizaci\u00f3n han hecho avanzar la explotaci\u00f3n de los recursos h\u00eddricos no potables en varios pa\u00edses como China,<span>\u00a0<\/span>M\u00e9xico, los Emiratos \u00c1rabes Unidos, Australia,<span>\u00a0<\/span>Egipto, los<span>\u00a0<\/span>Estados Unidos<span>\u00a0<\/span>y Europa durante a\u00f1os. Sin embargo, el sector est\u00e1 lejos de ser una realidad comercial consolidada, que colisiona d\u00eda a d\u00eda con los altos costes de producci\u00f3n y explotaci\u00f3n que lo convierten en una soluci\u00f3n en su mayor\u00eda intensiva en energ\u00eda y para unos pocos.<\/p>\n<p>El investigador Jeff Ong, del Laboratorio de s\u00edntesis y cat\u00e1lisis inorg\u00e1nica de la EPFL (Polit\u00e9cnica de Lausana) espera haber encontrado la soluci\u00f3n a los principales problemas econ\u00f3micos del sector. Ong ha desarrollado una m\u00e1quina de tratamiento de agua que combina las ventajas de las principales t\u00e9cnicas de desalinizaci\u00f3n, ofreciendo al mismo tiempo un mejor rendimiento. Por ejemplo, el prototipo elimina m\u00e1s del 99,9% de la sal del agua de mar con el mismo rendimiento que los sistemas m\u00e1s eficientes pero con menos energ\u00eda.<\/p>\n<h2>La evoluci\u00f3n de las tecnolog\u00edas de desalaci\u00f3n.<\/h2>\n<p>La principal tecnolog\u00eda de desalinizaci\u00f3n a gran escala que se utiliza hoy en d\u00eda es la<span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00f3smosis inversa. En el proceso directo, cuando dos l\u00edquidos id\u00e9nticos separados por una membrana semipermeable tienen una concentraci\u00f3n diferente de sal u otros minerales, el de menor concentraci\u00f3n pasa a trav\u00e9s de la membrana hasta que ambos alcanzan el equilibrio. En la \u00f3smosis inversa funciona exactamente al rev\u00e9s: se aplica presi\u00f3n al l\u00edquido m\u00e1s concentrado para que fluya a trav\u00e9s de la membrana de filtraci\u00f3n hacia el lado del agua potable. La t\u00e9cnica utiliza una cantidad relativamente grande de electricidad (alrededor de 4-5 kWh\/m3) y las membranas se deterioran r\u00e1pidamente, al igual que otros componentes, consumidos por las part\u00edculas minerales. Las plantas se deben limpiar qu\u00edmicamente varias veces al a\u00f1o y se deben reemplazar con mucha frecuencia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Esto significa altos costes de mantenimiento para los productores<\/em>\u201c, dice Ong. El concepto desarrollado por el investigador utiliza membranas de material hidr\u00f3fobo e inerte, que pueden consumirse con menor rapidez y reciclarse a bajo coste.<\/p>\n<p>Para maximizar la separaci\u00f3n de sales, el cient\u00edfico ha reunido una serie de m\u00f3dulos de desalinizaci\u00f3n basados en la evaporaci\u00f3n y ha integrado un sistema interno de recuperaci\u00f3n de calor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Estos principios de evaporaci\u00f3n y flujo de refrigeraci\u00f3n se utilizan com\u00fanmente en la industria de la energ\u00eda nuclear<\/em>\u201c, explica Ong. \u201c<em>Somos los primeros en aplicar el concepto en el campo de la filtraci\u00f3n de agua. Adem\u00e1s, la velocidad de trabajo se ha incrementado dos veces, lo que permite a la planta manejar concentraciones de sal muy altas -m\u00e1s de 200 g\/l- el doble que las tecnolog\u00edas est\u00e1ndar de separaci\u00f3n t\u00e9rmica y m\u00e1s de cuatro veces m\u00e1s que la \u00f3smosis inversa<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ong ha fundado una spin-off, Aqualife Global, con la que aportar tecnolog\u00eda al mercado y no s\u00f3lo al del agua potable.
