Es un asco\u201d. La frase puede ser producto de un berrinche, pero tambi\u00e9n describe con exactitud una tendencia agobiante del desarrollo de la inteligencia artificial (IA). <!--more-->Quienes mandan aqu\u00ed son las mismas tecnol\u00f3gicas de Silicon Valley que controlan todo lo dem\u00e1s: las omnipresentes GAFA (Google, Amazon, Facebook y Apple) junto a las no menos ubicuas IBM y Microsoft est\u00e1n monopolizando el campo de la inteligencia artificial, y decidiendo casi por entero la direcci\u00f3n de las investigaciones en el sector.<span>\u00a0<\/span>Lee en Materia<span>\u00a0<\/span>c\u00f3mo estos gigantes tecnol\u00f3gicos contratan a los mejores cerebros de los departamentos universitarios, compran las startups en cuanto asoman la cabeza con una idea nueva y dirigen el desarrollo del campo, como es l\u00f3gico, a la satisfacci\u00f3n de sus intereses comerciales. Sea un asco o no, es lo que hay.<\/p>\n<p>Un segundo debate, causado tambi\u00e9n por el flujo masivo de cient\u00edficos de todas las \u00e1reas al desarrollo industrial de la inteligencia artificial, es el uso solvente de estas tecnolog\u00edas. Aunque los gigantes tecnol\u00f3gicos no destacan precisamente por su transparencia, algunos de sus expertos comparten de vez en cuando con la comunidad cient\u00edfica un destilado de su arte. Es el caso de Patrick Riley, cient\u00edfico de la computaci\u00f3n de Google, que<span>\u00a0<\/span>aboga en<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Nature<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>por la adopci\u00f3n de unos est\u00e1ndares internacionales en la investigaci\u00f3n en IA y la manera adecuada de informar sobre ella.<\/p>\n<p>Aqu\u00ed no estamos hablando de pinchar anuncios ni de ninguna otra cosa que d\u00e9 asco, sino de una tecnolog\u00eda que empieza a resultar muy valiosa en el dise\u00f1o de f\u00e1rmacos y otras mol\u00e9culas, en la mejora del diagn\u00f3stico m\u00e9dico y en aspectos tan b\u00e1sicos de la ciencia como el descubrimiento de nuevas part\u00edculas elementales. Un problema central es la \u201ccaja negra\u201d de los algoritmos. Hemos conocido en estos a\u00f1os unos sistemas de aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico (<em>machine learning<\/em>) verdaderamente asombrosos, como AlphaGo Zero, que no solo aprendi\u00f3 a jugar al Go por s\u00ed solo, sino que descubri\u00f3 unas estrategias abstractas de alto nivel que se les hab\u00edan escapado a los grandes maestros durante siglos. La paradoja es que no sabemos bien c\u00f3mo funcionan estos algoritmos, que se comportan en este sentido como cajas opacas a nuestro entendimiento.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMuchos de los algoritmos son tan complicados\u201d, dice Riley, \u201cque es imposible inspeccionar todos los par\u00e1metros o razonar sobre la forma exacta en que los inputs se han manipulado\u201d. Este cient\u00edfico de Google prev\u00e9 que, a medida que estos algoritmos se extienden a cada vez m\u00e1s sectores cient\u00edficos e industriales, aumentar\u00e1n las conclusiones err\u00f3neas y las interpretaciones sesgadas, y buena parte de los esfuerzos de investigaci\u00f3n acabar\u00e1n en un callej\u00f3n sin salida.<\/p>\n<p>He aqu\u00ed dos grandes debates sobre la inteligencia artificial que recorren el mundo.
