El t\u00e9 de kombucha ha inspirado a un grupo de ingenieros del MIT y del Imperial College de Londres para crear materiales vivos con gran resistencia y amplia funcionalidad, capaces de purificar el agua, de desarrollar dispositivos inteligentes y de convertirse en fotograf\u00edas vivientes. Y adem\u00e1s se pueden fabricar en casa.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seg\u00fan un\u00a0comunicado<\/a>\u00a0del MIT, esos materiales vivos se han creado a partir de un cultivo simbi\u00f3tico de bacterias y levaduras, una plataforma flexible para la producci\u00f3n de materiales vivos dise\u00f1ados a base de celulosa bacteriana, con aplicaciones potenciales en biosensores y biocat\u00e1lisis.<\/span><\/p>\n

Esto significa que podr\u00e1n ser utilizados para purificar agua o para trabajar en la detecci\u00f3n de sustancias peligrosas, por ejemplo, insert\u00e1ndose en dispositivos \u201cinteligentes\u201d que advierten sobre da\u00f1os o amenazas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Los expertos creen que en un futuro estos materiales se podr\u00e1n cultivar en los hogares o en instalaciones locales de producci\u00f3n artesanal. Los resultados se han publicado en la revista Nature Materials.<\/span><\/p>\n

Parte del grupo de investigaci\u00f3n que ha desarrollado este estudio hab\u00eda encontrado a\u00f1os atr\u00e1s una forma de utilizar E. coli para generar biopel\u00edculas incrustadas con materiales como nanocables de oro.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ese anterior hallazgo se vio limitado debido a las escasas dimensiones y a la delgadez de las pel\u00edculas, caracter\u00edsticas que dificultan su uso en la mayor\u00eda de las aplicaciones a gran escala.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dise\u00f1o natural<\/span><\/h2>\n

Ahora, los ingenieros se propusieron hallar una forma de utilizar microbios para generar materiales m\u00e1s eficientes y de mayor tama\u00f1o. Se inspiraron en la poblaci\u00f3n de microbios existente en una madre kombucha, la mezcla de ciertos tipos de bacterias y levaduras que da lugar al popular t\u00e9 del mismo nombre.<\/span><\/p>\n

La mencionada mezcla es una verdadera f\u00e1brica de fermentaci\u00f3n, en la que se combina una especie de bacteria y diferentes variedades de levadura. De esta forma, se produce etanol, celulosa y \u00e1cido ac\u00e9tico, una combinaci\u00f3n que brinda al t\u00e9 de kombucha ese sabor tan especial.<\/span><\/p>\n

Con el prop\u00f3sito de demostrar el potencial de su cultivo de microbios, los investigadores desarrollaron un material que incorpora levadura y detecta el estradiol, un contaminante ambiental. Empleando otra cepa de levadura, que genera una prote\u00edna denominada luciferasa cuando se expone a la luz azul, desarrollaron un material vivo con capacidad para detectar diferentes contaminantes, metales peligrosos o pat\u00f3genos.<\/span><\/p>\n

En cualquier cocina<\/span><\/h3>\n

De acuerdo a una\u00a0nota de prensa<\/a>\u00a0del Imperial College de Londres, estos materiales vivos dise\u00f1ados (ELM) tienen un gran potencial para distintas aplicaciones, pero hasta el momento se han visto limitados por problemas de escalabilidad. Adem\u00e1s de usarse para detectar y filtrar contaminantes en el agua o en envases para alertar sobre da\u00f1os y amenazas mediante fluorescencia, pueden transformarse en una especie de \u00abfotograf\u00edas vivientes\u00bb, mostrando im\u00e1genes proyectadas sobre ellos.<\/span><\/p>\n

Al tomar como modelo el enfoque simbi\u00f3tico natural de la kombucha, la nueva investigaci\u00f3n ha dado lugar al nacimiento de una nueva generaci\u00f3n de materiales vivos ELM, pero que hora podr\u00e1n desarrollarse a gran escala al incrementar su eficiencia, resistencia y optimizar sus dimensiones.<\/span><\/p>\n
