La sustancia podr\u00eda dejar obsoletas las bombonas de ox\u00edgeno tradicionales.<\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan\u00a0explica\u00a0la Profesora Christine McKenzie, el material absorbe ox\u00edgeno del propio aire. Una cucharada de estos cristales es suficiente para extraer y almacenar todo el ox\u00edgeno de una habitaci\u00f3n. Hay muchas sustancias que reaccionan con el ox\u00edgeno. Lo sorprendente de esta es que no lo hace de manera irreversible, sino que lo almacena en altas concentraciones que despu\u00e9s pueden ser liberadas aplicando presi\u00f3n o calor. &#8220;Es como una hemoglobina artificial&#8221;,\u00a0comenta McKenzie, &#8220;y puede utilizarse para almacenar y transportar grandes cantidades de ox\u00edgeno&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>En estado normal, el cristal es de un color rosado o rojo, y se va oscureciendo hasta volverse completamente negro al saturarse con ox\u00edgeno. Su capacidad es de 160 veces la concentraci\u00f3n de ox\u00edgeno en el aire.<\/p>\n<p>Los investigadores aseguran que su capacidad para almacenar ox\u00edgeno es aproximadamente tres veces superior a la de un tanque de ox\u00edgeno a presi\u00f3n para el mismo volumen y peso.<\/p>\n<p>Por si fuera poco, sus propiedades no se pierden con el uso sucesivo. En otras palabras, puede atrapar y soltar ox\u00edgeno repetidas veces.\u00a0La velocidad a la que absorbe ox\u00edgeno este fant\u00e1stico material depende de la composici\u00f3n del aire y del propio material.<\/p>\n<p>El equipo responsable de su descubrimiento ha registrado diferentes tasas de absorci\u00f3n que van desde unos pocos segundos hasta minutos, horas o d\u00edas. Ahora McKenzie y su equipo trabajan en refinar la sustancia y comprobar si tambi\u00e9n puede soltar su carga al ser sometida a luz en vez de presi\u00f3n o calor. El material podr\u00eda revolucionar la manera en la que almacenamos ox\u00edgeno para uso m\u00e9dico o industrial, la fabricaci\u00f3n de filtros de aire o incluso la propia carrera espacial.<BR
