Es el resultado de tres a\u00f1os de investigaci\u00f3n, con la asesor\u00eda de la Fundaci\u00f3n de Investigaci\u00f3n en Diabetes Juvenil.<\/span><\/span><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Los cient\u00edficos liderados por Omid Veiseh y Jordan Miller utilizaron c\u00e9lulas beta productoras de insulina, a partir de c\u00e9lulas madre humanas, para crear el implante. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Este detecta y regula los niveles de glucosa en la sangre, respondiendo con la cantidad de insulina necesaria.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">La insulina es una hormona polipept\u00eddica producida y secretada por las c\u00e9lulas beta de los islotes de Langerhans del p\u00e1ncreas. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Su funci\u00f3n principal es permitir la disposici\u00f3n de las c\u00e9lulas del aporte necesario de glucosa para los procesos de s\u00edntesis con gasto de energ\u00eda.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Por tanto, la persona con diabetes no puede producir una cantidad suficiente de insulina, o no puede utilizar adecuadamente la insulina que produce. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Al no haber suficiente insulina, o que las c\u00e9lulas no responsan, queda demasiada az\u00facar en el torrente sangu\u00edneo.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Con el tiempo, como explican los CDC, esto genera problemas de salud graves, tanto en el coraz\u00f3n, la vista y los ri\u00f1ones.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Cuando la diabetes es tipo 1, el cuerpo no puede producir insulina. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Si es tipo 2, el cuerpo no usa la insulina adecuadamente, imposibilit\u00e1ndose el mantenimiento del az\u00facar en la sangre a niveles normales.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">El implante productor de insulina para la diabetes<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Tanto Veiseh como Miller han trabajado durante casi quince a\u00f1os con biomateriales y t\u00e9cnicas de impresi\u00f3n de tejidos en 3D con vasculatura.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cSi realmente queremos recapitular lo que el p\u00e1ncreas hace normalmente, necesitamos vasculatura\u201d, se\u00f1ala Veiseh en la nota de prensa difundida por Rice. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cEse es el prop\u00f3sito de este estudio. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">El p\u00e1ncreas tiene naturalmente todos estos vasos sangu\u00edneos, y las c\u00e9lulas se organizan de maneras particulares en el p\u00e1ncreas \u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">&#8220;Jordan y yo queremos imprimir en la misma orientaci\u00f3n que existe en la naturaleza&#8221;, agreg\u00f3.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">La meta de los cient\u00edficos es demostrar que su implante puede regular adecuadamente los niveles de glucosa en la sangre. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Trabajar\u00e1n primero con ratones diab\u00e9ticos por, al menos, seis meses.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Las c\u00e9lulas productoras de insulina estar\u00e1n protegidas con una formulaci\u00f3n de hidrogel desarrollada por Veiseh. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">El material, que ha demostrado ser eficaz para tratamientos encapsulares celulares en esferas del tama\u00f1o de una perla, cuenta con poros tan peque\u00f1os para evitar que las c\u00e9lulas de su interior sean atacadas por el sistema inmunol\u00f3gico.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Sin embargo, son lo suficientemente grandes como para permitir el paso de nutrientes e insulina.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color:
