#000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Apenas un a\u00f1o despu\u00e9s de ganar el Premio Nobel de Qu\u00edmica, Jennifer Doudna ha logrado un nuevo avance para la ciencia y la humanidad.<\/span><\/span><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">La experimentada bioqu\u00edmica y sus colegas de la Universidad de California en Berkeley y el Instituto de Virolog\u00eda Gladstone (San Francisco) identificaron en la variante Delta del coronavirus una mutaci\u00f3n que le permite propagarse en el cuerpo con gran rapidez caracter\u00edstica, que podr\u00eda estar vinculado a su mayor capacidad de contagio, seg\u00fan el nuevo estudio publicado en Science.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Hasta ahora, se sabe que Delta tiene ventaja sobre las dem\u00e1s variantes del SARS-CoV-2 debido a mutaciones (cambios gen\u00e9ticos) que potencian a su prote\u00edna S, la parte del virus que le permite entrar en la c\u00e9lula humana.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Sin embargo, hay mutaciones que no se han podido estudiar porque sus efectos se dan en el interior del virus. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">All\u00ed se encuentra la nucleoc\u00e1pside, tambi\u00e9n llamada prote\u00edna N, que se encarga de almacenar el material gen\u00e9tico (ARN) y liberarlo dentro de la c\u00e9lula para replicarse y producir millas de copias virales.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Una t\u00e9cnica novedosa<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Para desvelar este misterio, el equipo de Doudna desarroll\u00f3 part\u00edculas imitadoras de virus con todas las partes del SARS-CoV-2 y modific\u00f3 su prote\u00edna N con mutaciones presentes en las variantes conocidas.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Cuando infectaron las c\u00e9lulas con estas part\u00edculas, observaron que las que ten\u00edan la mutaci\u00f3n R203M, present tambi\u00e9n en la prote\u00edna N de la variante Delta, produjeron 10 veces m\u00e1s copias de ARN en comparaci\u00f3n con el virus original.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Este resultado fue, en palabras de Doudna, \u201cuna sorpresa\u201d. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Pero a\u00fan ten\u00edan que corroborarlos. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">As\u00ed que se trasladaron a un laboratorio con condiciones de bioseguridad de alto nivel: era momento de probar con virus de verdad.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">En las personas infectadas con coronavirus, un porcentaje muy peque\u00f1o de part\u00edculas virales producidas por una c\u00e9lula son capaces de infectar otras c\u00e9lulas. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Una causa de ello es que carecen de fragmentos de ARN o de la totalidad de este material gen\u00e9tico, explica la revista Science.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Pero parece que la mutaci\u00f3n R203M vuelve al virus m\u00e1s eficiente para colocar ARN en las nuevas copias virales.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cEsta mutaci\u00f3n que se encuentra en Delta hace que el virus sea mejor en la producci\u00f3n de part\u00edculas infecciosas y, por eso, se propaga m\u00e1s r\u00e1pidamente\u201d, se\u00f1al\u00f3 el ingeniero biom\u00e9dico Abdullah Syed, coautor del estudio.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Objetivo de futuros tratamientos<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">La investigaci\u00f3n revela que esta parte mutada de la prote\u00edna N es una poderosa arma que la variante Delta aprovecha durante la infecci\u00f3n.
