En este proceso, las algas, calificadas de\u00a0bosque escondido, aprovechan la abundante luz solar que incide sobre el mar para activar su fotos\u00edntesis.<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A ra\u00edz de este descubrimiento, la pregunta que se plantearon los cient\u00edficos es si tambi\u00e9n existe un bosque escondido en tierra firme. Todo apunta a que s\u00ed, que no todo es oscuridad en el suelo. Tal y como se ha acreditado, la luz permite la vida de un promedio de 5 millones de algas microsc\u00f3picas, bacterias y eucariotas fotosintetizadores por gramo de suelo a nivel global. No obstante, hasta el momento, la presencia de estos organismos hab\u00eda sido calificada de discreta y el papel que juegan en la biodiversidad era considerado meramente anecd\u00f3tico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Una investigaci\u00f3n llevada a cabo por cient\u00edficos europeos entre los que figura\u00a0Enrique Lara, investigador del\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csic.es\/es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cient\u00edficas<\/a>\u00a0(CSIC) en el\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rjb.csic.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Real Jard\u00edn Bot\u00e1nico<\/a>\u00a0(RJB) de Madrid, demuestra ahora que\u00a0las algas del suelo tienen una especial relevancia para los ecosistemas terrestres. Tal y como hacen las plantas, estos microorganismos captan el CO2\u00a0atmosf\u00e9rico y contribuyen as\u00ed al almacenamiento del carbono en el suelo, actuando de esta manera contra el calentamiento global.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Los autores de este estudio, que acaba de publicarse en la revista\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newphytologist.org\/journals\/new-phytologist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The New Phytologist<\/a>, han recopilado datos de productividad y han cuantificado la masa de carbono captada anualmente por las algas microsc\u00f3picas a nivel planetario a trav\u00e9s de modelizaciones basadas en aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico (machine learning).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Captan hasta 3,6 gigatoneladas de carbono al a\u00f1o<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cEstos datos nos han permitido estimar que las algas del suelo captan hasta 3,6 gigatoneladas de carbono por a\u00f1o, lo que representa aproximadamente un 30% de las emisiones anuales humanas de CO2 a nivel global\u201d, asegura el investigador Enrique Lara. Asimismo, este descubrimiento permite desmontar algunos apriorismos en ecolog\u00eda microbiana, seg\u00fan los cuales la fotos\u00edntesis microbiana era relevante \u00fanicamente en ambientes acu\u00e1ticos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Enrique Lara considera que \u201cestos resultados revelan la importancia de preservar los ecosistemas terrestres como una tarea urgente a la hora de reducir el CO2 atmosf\u00e9rico para salvaguardar el clima.
