punto concreto del espacio y el tiempo. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Empleados en muchas \u00e1reas de investigaci\u00f3n, los magnet\u00f3metros pueden ayudar a los m\u00e9dicos a ver el interior de un cerebro en funcionamiento, oa los arque\u00f3logos a encontrar objetos antiguos sepultados bajo tierra sin tener que excavar en el suelo.<\/span><\/span><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Algunos campos magn\u00e9ticos de gran inter\u00e9s, por ejemplo, los producidos por el cerebro, son extraordinariamente d\u00e9biles y, por tanto, se necesitan magnet\u00f3metros con una sensibilidad enorme para detectarlos. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Tal fin, se han inventado muchas tecnolog\u00edas ex\u00f3ticas. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Hasta ahora, sin embargo, la sensibilidad de todas estas tecnolog\u00edas se ha estancado m\u00e1s o menos en el mismo nivel, lo que significa que algunas se\u00f1ales magn\u00e9ticas han estado fuera de su alcance por ser demasiado d\u00e9biles.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Fue hacia 1980, cuando los sensores magn\u00e9ticos superconductores alcanzaron un nivel de resoluci\u00f3n que desde entonces no hab\u00eda podido ser superado y que en muchos aspectos se ha llegado considerando un l\u00edmite infranqueable.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Un equipo internacional que incluye, entre otros, a Silvana Palacios del Instituto de Ciencias Fot\u00f3nicas (ICFO) en Castelldefels, Barcelona, \u200b\u200bCatalu\u00f1a, Espa\u00f1a, y Roberto Zamora, de la Universidad Aalto en Finlandia, ha ideado un novedoso magnet\u00f3metro que por primera vez consigue una resoluci\u00f3n que supera ampliamente este l\u00edmite.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">El equipo extrajo un condensado de Bose-Einstein para crear el nuevo sensor. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Este condensado estaba formado por \u00e1tomos de rubidio, enfriados a temperaturas de tan solo unos nanogrados por encima de la temperatura m\u00e1s baja que permiten las leyes de la f\u00edsica (el Cero Absoluto). <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Este descenso de temperatura se mejora por enfriamiento evaporativo en un vac\u00edo casi perfecto. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Se minimiz\u00f3 el efecto de la gravedad con la ayuda de una trampa \u00f3ptica.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"RichTextAlignCenter citewrapper\" style=\"color: style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">A estas temperaturas ultrafr\u00edas, los \u00e1tomos forman un superfluido magn\u00e9tico que responde a los campos magn\u00e9ticos del mismo modo que la aguja de una br\u00fajula normal, aunque en este caso la \u201caguja\u201d puede reorientarse sin fricci\u00f3n ni viscosidad. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Por ello, un campo magn\u00e9tico extraordinariamente d\u00e9bil puede bastar para hacer que el condensado se reoriente, lo que permite detectar dicho campo. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Los investigadores han obtenido con este magnet\u00f3metro de condensado de Bose-Einstein alcanzar una resoluci\u00f3n 17 veces mejor que cualquier tecnolog\u00eda anterior.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span
