Cada fibra est\u00e1 reforzada en su interior por nanocristales de celulosa.<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A escala nanom\u00e9trica, los nanocristales de celulosa son m\u00e1s fuertes y r\u00edgidos que el Kevlar, un material empleado en chalecos antibala.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Un modo viable de usar esos cristales en materiales artificiales permitir\u00eda conseguir pl\u00e1sticos m\u00e1s resistentes, m\u00e1s sostenibles y de origen natural.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cada a\u00f1o se generan m\u00e1s de 10.000 millones de toneladas de celulosa a partir de vegetales. La mayor parte de esta celulosa se utiliza para fabricar papel y tejidos textiles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">En a\u00f1os recientes, ha crecido el inter\u00e9s por explorar los usos potenciales de los nanocristales de celulosa, que pueden extraerse de las fibras de celulosa mediante hidr\u00f3lisis \u00e1cida.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Estos cristales excepcionalmente fuertes podr\u00edan utilizarse como refuerzos naturales en materiales basados en pol\u00edmeros. Pero hasta ahora solo se hab\u00eda conseguido incorporar fracciones bajas de nanocristales de celulosa, ya que tales cristales tienden a formar grumos y a unirse demasiado d\u00e9bilmente a las mol\u00e9culas de los pol\u00edmeros.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ahora, el equipo de A. John Hart, del\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/web.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instituto Tecnol\u00f3gico de Massachusetts (MIT)<\/a>\u00a0en Estados Unidos, ha dise\u00f1ado un compuesto hecho principalmente de nanocristales de celulosa mezclados con un poco de pol\u00edmero sint\u00e9tico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">En este nuevo material, los cristales org\u00e1nicos ocupan entre el 60 y el 90 por ciento del material, la mayor fracci\u00f3n de nanocristales de celulosa lograda en un compuesto hasta la fecha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hart y sus colegas descubrieron que el compuesto a base de celulosa es m\u00e1s fuerte y resistente que algunos tipos de hueso, y m\u00e1s duro que las aleaciones t\u00edpicas de aluminio. El material tiene una microestructura que se asemeja a la del n\u00e1car, el duro revestimiento interior de la concha de algunos moluscos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">El equipo de Hart expone los detalles t\u00e9cnicos del nuevo material en la revista acad\u00e9mica\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.springer.com\/journal\/10570\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cellulose<\/a>, bajo el t\u00edtulo de \u201cPrintable, castable, nanocrystalline cellulose-epoxy composites exhibiting hierarchical nacre-like toughening\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fuente:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>M.
