Su grosor es cien veces inferior al de un cabello humano y entre dos y cuatro veces menor que el de las c\u00e9lulas solares m\u00e1s ligeras.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nuestras c\u00e9lulas fotovoltaicas tienen un grosor aproximado de un micr\u00f3metro&#8221;, es decir, la mil\u00e9sima parte de un mil\u00edmetro, dice Jongho Lee, del Instituto Gwangju Institute de Ciencia y Tecnolog\u00eda de Corea del Sur. Es uno de los integrantes del grupo de cient\u00edficos surcoreanos responsables de esta investigaci\u00f3n que publica la revista Applied Physics Letters.<\/p>\n<p>Este nuevo tipo de c\u00e9lulas solares son capaces de convertir la luz del Sol en electricidad con la misma eficiencia que otras de grosor similar, pero con la ventaja de poder envolver superficies con un radio tan peque\u00f1o como 1.4 mil\u00edmetros. &#8220;El grupo surcoreano ha demostrado por primera vez la fabricaci\u00f3n de c\u00e9lulas solares de alta eficiencia con una enorme flexibilidad&#8221;, indica a EL MUNDO Pablo Aitor Postigo, del Grupo de Dispositivos Nanofot\u00f3nicos del Instituto de Microelectr\u00f3nica de Madrid. Para conseguirlo, los investigadores han dejado de lado el silicio -el material que suele emplearse- y, en su lugar, han utilizado arseniuro de galio como material semiconductor que puede absorber la luz y transformarla en electricidad.<\/p>\n<p>Otro aspecto relevante es que se ha prescindido de adhesivo en el producto final para fijar las c\u00e9lulas solares a la superficie de metal que les sirve de base a trav\u00e9s de un proceso de soldadura a presi\u00f3n a 170 \u00baC. Un m\u00e9todo con el que es posible crear c\u00e9lulas fotovoltaicas muy flexibles con menor cantidad de material. El problema de unas &#8216;placas&#8217; tan finas es que no toda la luz puede ser absorbida a la primera; de ah\u00ed la importancia de la base met\u00e1lica, que &#8220;act\u00faa como espejo y ayuda a que esta luz, que de otra manera se perder\u00eda, pueda reutilizarse&#8221;, explica Postigo. Su grupo de investigaci\u00f3n, adem\u00e1s, trabaja en el desarrollo de una c\u00e9lula solar de 50 nan\u00f3metros de espesor -20 veces m\u00e1s delgada que la de los surcoreanos-.<\/p>\n<p>M\u00e1s econ\u00f3micas y m\u00e1s sostenibles<\/p>\n<p>Tampoco se fabrican con silicio las c\u00e9lulas solares que han dise\u00f1ado investigadores del Instituto de Ciencias Fot\u00f3nicas (ICFO, en Barcelona) y que se describen en la revista Nature Photonics. La alternativa la encontraron en el sulfobismuturo de plata, AgBiS2, compuesto que incluye elementos qu\u00edmicos no t\u00f3xicos y abundantes en la naturaleza y con el que pretenden fabricar c\u00e9lulas solares m\u00e1s ecol\u00f3gicas, seguras y sostenibles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Una caracter\u00edstica muy interesante de las c\u00e9lulas solares de AgBiS2 recae en el hecho de que pueden fabricarse en aire y a bajas temperaturas, utilizando t\u00e9cnicas de procesado en soluci\u00f3n sin necesidad de emplear equipos caros y sofisticados para fabricar muchas otras c\u00e9lulas solares. Estas caracter\u00edsticas dan a estas c\u00e9lulas solares un potencial significativo como una alternativa de bajo coste a las c\u00e9lulas solares tradicionales&#8221;, explica Nicky Miller, cient\u00edfica del ICFO.<\/p>\n<p>Con esta tecnolog\u00eda se reduce el tama\u00f1o de los equipos y se logra convertir en energ\u00eda el seis por ciento de la potencia de la luz solar. &#8220;Estos primeros resultados son muy alentadores, sin embargo, esto es solo el principio y por tanto ya estamos trabajando en nuestro siguiente hito buscando conseguir eficiencias superiores al 12 por ciento&#8221;, se\u00f1ala Gerasimos Konstantatos, profesor del Instituto Catal\u00e1n de Investigaci\u00f3n y Estadios Avanzados en el ICFO.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Los relojes y gafas inteligentes del futuro podr\u00edan decir adi\u00f3s a las bater\u00edas tradicionales gracias a unas &#8216;placas&#8217;
