Los resultados demuestran que la hackmanita, de bajo coste, gran durabilidad y f\u00e1cil de sintetizar, puede ser de gran utilidad para diversas aplicaciones pr\u00e1cticas.<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">La investigaci\u00f3n es obra del equipo internacional de Mika Lastusaari, de la Universidad de Turku en Finlandia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Estos cient\u00edficos llevan casi una d\u00e9cada investigando las propiedades de la hackmanita y aprendiendo a aprovecharlas del mejor modo posible. Aplicaciones pr\u00e1cticas como la vigilancia de los niveles de radiaci\u00f3n ultravioleta a los que la persona est\u00e1 expuesta, ya se han desarrollado, bas\u00e1ndose en la capacidad de la hackmanita para cambiar de color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">La hackmanita cambia su color de blanco a p\u00farpura bajo la irradiaci\u00f3n ultravioleta y luego vuelve a ser blanca si la luz ultravioleta ya no incide en ella.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Las caracter\u00edsticas estructurales que permiten estos cambios repetidos no han estado claras hasta ahora. (Fotos: Mika Lastusaari)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Los minerales de esta clase contienen compuestos inorg\u00e1nicos, pero tambi\u00e9n hay compuestos org\u00e1nicos, hidrocarburos esencialmente, que pueden cambiar de color de forma reversible debido a la exposici\u00f3n a la radiaci\u00f3n. Sin embargo, estos hidrocarburos solo pueden cambiar de color unas pocas veces antes de que su estructura molecular se rompa. Esto se debe a que el cambio de color implica un cambio dr\u00e1stico en la estructura, y someterse a este cambio repetidamente acaba por romper la mol\u00e9cula.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">En el nuevo estudio, Lastusaari y sus colegas descubrieron que tambi\u00e9n hay un cambio estructural en el proceso de cambio de color. Cuando el color cambia, los \u00e1tomos de sodio de la estructura se alejan de sus lugares habituales y luego vuelven a ellos. Podr\u00edamos describir este proceso como una especie de \u201crespiraci\u00f3n estructural\u201d ya que no destruye la estructura aunque se repita un gran n\u00famero de veces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Los autores del estudio tambi\u00e9n comprobaron que la capacidad de la hackmanita de alternar entre el color blanco y el p\u00farpura es altamente repetible. La durabilidad se debe a la robusta estructura tridimensional de este mineral.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">La hackmanita tiene un incre\u00edble potencial para muchas aplicaciones pr\u00e1cticas. Por ejemplo, se la podr\u00eda usar en la captaci\u00f3n de im\u00e1genes en rayos X, y tambi\u00e9n para sustituir a los LEDs y a otras l\u00e1mparas en algunos casos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Una de las aplicaciones potenciales m\u00e1s interesantes que los investigadores est\u00e1n explorando actualmente es un dos\u00edmetro basado en hackmanita y detectores pasivos para la Estaci\u00f3n Espacial Internacional, destinados a medir la absorci\u00f3n de dosis de radiaci\u00f3n de los materiales durante vuelos espaciales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lastusaari y sus colegas exponen los detalles t\u00e9cnicos de sus \u00faltimos hallazgos en la revista acad\u00e9mica Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), bajo el t\u00edtulo \u201cThe structural origin of the efficient photochromism in natural minerals\u201d.
