El ADN se compone de cuatro bases qu\u00edmicas denominadas abreviadamente A, T, C y G. Esas bases se emparejan para formar los &#8220;pelda\u00f1os&#8221; de la estructura en escalera de doble h\u00e9lice del ADN.<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mientras que otras plataformas de edici\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica, como CRISPR-Cas9, cortan ambas hebras del cromosoma para realizar cambios en el ADN, la edici\u00f3n de bases solo cambia qu\u00edmicamente una letra del ADN por otra (una A por una G, por ejemplo) dejando el cromosoma intacto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Una investigaci\u00f3n reciente, llevada a cabo por los equipos de Donald Kohn y Gay Crooks, ambos de la Universidad de California en Los \u00c1ngeles (UCLA) de Estados Unidos, sugiere que la edici\u00f3n de bases podr\u00eda utilizarse como tratamiento para curar de una sola vez la rara y mortal enfermedad gen\u00e9tica conocida como inmunodeficiencia combinada grave por CD3 delta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">La enfermedad est\u00e1 causada por una mutaci\u00f3n en el gen CD3D, que impide la producci\u00f3n de la prote\u00edna CD3 delta, necesaria para el desarrollo normal de las c\u00e9lulas T a partir de c\u00e9lulas madre de la sangre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sin c\u00e9lulas T, el sistema inmunitario de los beb\u00e9s nacidos con inmunodeficiencia combinada grave por CD3 delta es incapaz de combatir las infecciones y, si no reciben tratamiento, suelen morir en los dos primeros a\u00f1os de vida. (Ilustraci\u00f3n: Amazings \/ NCYT)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Los autores del nuevo estudio han mostrado que la edici\u00f3n de bases puede corregir en las c\u00e9lulas madre sangu\u00edneas la mutaci\u00f3n culpable de la inmunodeficiencia combinada grave por CD3 delta y restaurar la capacidad de dichas c\u00e9lulas madre para producir c\u00e9lulas T.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">De todos modos, por ahora esta terapia potencial no ha sido probada en humanos, solo en ensayos precl\u00ednicos, y no cuenta por ahora con la autorizaci\u00f3n de la Administraci\u00f3n estadounidense de Alimentos y Medicamentos (FDA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">El estudio se titula \u201cHuman T cell generation is restored in CD3\u03b4 severe combined immunodeficiency through adenine base editing\u201d.
