The FLI letter has thousands of signatories\u2014including deep learning pioneer, Yoshua Bengio, University of California Berkeley professor of computer science, Stuart Russell, Stability AI CEO, Emad Mostaque, Elon Musk, and many others\u2014and has stirred vigorous debate in the AI community.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2026<\/span><\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Regarding the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/futureoflife.org\/open-letter\/pause-giant-ai-experiments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open letter<\/a>\u00a0to \u201cpause\u201d research on AI \u201cmore powerful than\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/product\/gpt-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GPT-4<\/a>,\u201d this criterion is too vague to be practical. And the proposal faces a serious coordination problem: those that agree to a pause may fall far behind corporations or nations that disagree. There are tremendous benefits to advancing AI in critical fields such as medicine and health, education, pursuit of renewable energy sources to replace fossil fuels, and scores of other fields. I didn\u2019t sign, because I believe we can address the signers\u2019 safety concerns in a more tailored way that doesn\u2019t compromise these vital lines of research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I participated in the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/futureoflife.org\/open-letter\/ai-principles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Asilomar AI Principles Conference<\/a>\u00a0in 2017 and was actively involved in the creation of guidelines to create artificial intelligence in an ethical manner. So I know that safety is a critical issue.
