Sin embargo, estos sistemas generan desechos radiactivos, que pueden ser peligrosos para la salud humana y el medio ambiente. La eliminaci\u00f3n segura de estos desechos puede ser un desaf\u00edo.<\/p>\n<p>Utilizando una combinaci\u00f3n de cristales centelleadores, materiales de alta densidad que emiten luz cuando absorben radiaci\u00f3n y c\u00e9lulas solares, el equipo demostr\u00f3 que la radiaci\u00f3n gamma ambiental podr\u00eda ser recolectada para producir una salida el\u00e9ctrica lo suficientemente fuerte como para alimentar la microelectr\u00f3nica, como los microchips.<\/p>\n<p>Para probar esta bater\u00eda, que es un prototipo de unos 4 cent\u00edmetros c\u00fabicos de tama\u00f1o, los investigadores utilizaron dos fuentes radiactivas diferentes, cesio-137 y cobalto-60, algunos de los productos de fisi\u00f3n m\u00e1s importantes que provienen del combustible nuclear gastado. La bater\u00eda fue probada en el Laboratorio de Reactores Nucleares (NRL) de Ohio State.<\/p>\n<p>Sus resultados mostraron que cuando se utiliz\u00f3 cesio-137, la bater\u00eda gener\u00f3 288 nanovatios. Sin embargo, con el is\u00f3topo mucho m\u00e1s fuerte, el cobalto-60, la bater\u00eda produjo 1,5 microvatios de energ\u00eda, aproximadamente lo suficiente para encender un sensor diminuto.<\/p>\n<p>Aunque la mayor\u00eda de las salidas de energ\u00eda para hogares y dispositivos electr\u00f3nicos se miden en kilovatios, esto sugiere que con la fuente de energ\u00eda adecuada, dichos dispositivos podr\u00edan ampliarse para aplicaciones espec\u00edficas en el nivel de vatios o m\u00e1s, dijo en un comunicado Raymond Cao, autor principal del estudio y profesor de ingenier\u00eda mec\u00e1nica y aeroespacial en Ohio State.<\/p>\n<p>El estudio fue publicado recientemente en la revista Optical Materials: X.<\/p>\n<p>Los investigadores dijeron que estas bater\u00edas se utilizar\u00edan cerca de donde se producen los desechos nucleares, como en piscinas de almacenamiento de desechos nucleares o sistemas nucleares para la exploraci\u00f3n espacial y de aguas profundas; no est\u00e1n dise\u00f1adas para uso p\u00fablico. Afortunadamente, aunque la radiaci\u00f3n gamma utilizada en este trabajo es aproximadamente cien veces m\u00e1s penetrante que una radiograf\u00eda o una tomograf\u00eda computarizada normal, la bater\u00eda en s\u00ed no incorpora materiales radiactivos, lo que significa que a\u00fan es seguro tocarla.<\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan el estudio, la bater\u00eda del equipo tambi\u00e9n puede haber experimentado un aumento de potencia debido a la composici\u00f3n del prototipo de cristal centelleador que el equipo opt\u00f3 por utilizar. Descubrieron que incluso la forma y el tama\u00f1o de los cristales pueden afectar la salida el\u00e9ctrica final, ya que un mayor volumen le permite absorber m\u00e1s radiaci\u00f3n y convertir esa energ\u00eda adicional en m\u00e1s luz.
