Gracias a los avances en la nanotecnolog\u00eda (manipular la materia a una escala at\u00f3mica o molecular), la industria puede fabricar materiales cuidando detalles tan peque\u00f1os como del orden de la milmillon\u00e9sima de metro.<\/p>\n<p>Los nuevos cables pueden ser producidos usando fuentes de energ\u00eda renovables y \u201cverdes\u201d, como la energ\u00eda solar, y empleando como materias primas sustancias de tan poco valor como el di\u00f3xido de carbono o los desechos vegetales. En su composici\u00f3n final, estos innovadores cables est\u00e1n hechos de prote\u00ednas naturales no t\u00f3xicas, y en su elaboraci\u00f3n no se necesita ninguno de los problem\u00e1ticos procesos qu\u00edmicos usados habitualmente para crear materiales nanoelectr\u00f3nicos.<\/p>\n<p>La pieza central del trabajo de investigaci\u00f3n y desarrollo a cargo del equipo de Derek Lovley, en la Universidad de Massachusetts en Amherst, Estados Unidos, es la Geobacter, una bacteria que produce nanohilos (filamentos de prote\u00edna semejantes a cabellos que surgen del organismo). Estos filamentos le permiten a la bacteria realizar conexiones el\u00e9ctricas con los \u00f3xidos de hierro que ayudan a su crecimiento en el suelo. Aunque la Geobacter transporta de forma natural suficiente electricidad para su propia supervivencia, la corriente es demasiado d\u00e9bil para uso humano, pero suficiente para ser medida con electrodos.<\/p>\n<p>El equipo de Lovley ajust\u00f3 el contenido gen\u00e9tico de la bacteria para retirar dos amino\u00e1cidos presentes de forma natural en los hilos y reemplazar ambos por tript\u00f3fano, que es muy bueno para transportar electrones a escala nanom\u00e9trica.<\/p>\n<p>La idea surgi\u00f3 cuando Lovley y sus colaboradores desentra\u00f1aron algunos de los entresijos del funcionamiento de los nanohilos microbianos. Entonces se dieron cuenta de que podr\u00eda ser posible mejorar el dise\u00f1o de la naturaleza. El equipo de Lovley reorganiz\u00f3 los amino\u00e1cidos para producir el nanohilo sint\u00e9tico.<\/p>\n<p>Los resultados superaron las expectativas del equipo dado que los nanohilos sint\u00e9ticos, que conten\u00edan tript\u00f3fano, eran 2 mil veces m\u00e1s conductores que sus hom\u00f3logos naturales. Y han resultado ser m\u00e1s duraderos y mucho m\u00e1s peque\u00f1os, con un di\u00e1metro de 1.5 nan\u00f3metros (m\u00e1s de 60 mil veces m\u00e1s delgados que un cabello humano), lo que significa
