Gay Crooks, codirectora del Centro Eli y Edythe Broad de Medicina Regenerativa e Investigaci\u00f3n de C\u00e9lulas Madre, una instituci\u00f3n adscrita a la Universidad de California en Los \u00c1ngeles (UCLA).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">El \u00f3rgano del cual se ha creado una versi\u00f3n reducida modificada (organoide) es el conocido como \u201ctimo\u201d. El timo se halla frente al coraz\u00f3n y desempe\u00f1a un papel fundamental en el sistema inmunitario. Utiliza c\u00e9lulas madre sangu\u00edneas para producir c\u00e9lulas T, que ayudan al cuerpo a luchar contra infecciones y poseen la capacidad de eliminar c\u00e9lulas cancerosas siempre y cuando logren reconocerlas. Sin embargo, a medida que las personas envejecen o enferman, el timo pierde eficiencia a la hora de producir c\u00e9lulas T.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Las c\u00e9lulas T generadas en el timo adquieren unas mol\u00e9culas especializadas, llamadas receptores, en su superficie, y esos receptores las ayudan a buscar y destruir c\u00e9lulas infectadas por virus o c\u00e9lulas cancerosas. Potenciar este proceso ha surgido como un \u00e1rea prometedora de investigaci\u00f3n contra el c\u00e1ncer: los cient\u00edficos han hallado que armar grandes cantidades de c\u00e9lulas T con receptores espec\u00edficos para detectar c\u00e9lulas cancerosas consigue resultados notables en los ensayos cl\u00ednicos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Esta estrategia exige normalmente obtener c\u00e9lulas T de personas que tienen c\u00e1ncer, modificarlas en el laboratorio con un receptor que las capacite para encontrar el c\u00e1ncer, y volver a introducirlas en el paciente.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sin embargo, los tratamientos mediante esta estrategia pueden precisar mucho tiempo, y las personas con c\u00e1ncer podr\u00edan no tener suficientes c\u00e9lulas T para que este m\u00e9todo funcione.
