La clave est\u00e1 en la llamada &#8220;reprogramaci\u00f3n celular&#8221;.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Imagina que tienes una enfermedad, pongamos que es degenerativa, y pongamos que es ocular. Vas al m\u00e9dico, y \u00e9ste, tras examinarte, te recomienda una terapia regenerativa. Introducir\u00e1n quir\u00fargicamente nuevas c\u00e9lulas en tu retina para que desempe\u00f1en el trabajo de las da\u00f1adas. La operaci\u00f3n, relativamente sencilla, puede programarse inmediatamente, ya que las c\u00e9lulas que necesitas est\u00e1n disponibles en el banco celular del hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Hasta la semana pasada esto era ciencia ficci\u00f3n, pero el 28 de marzo\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lab.kobe-u.ac.jp\/gmed-ipsc\/en\/index.html\">un equipo del hospital de Kobe<\/a>, en Jap\u00f3n, lo convirti\u00f3 en ciencia.<\/p>\n<p>El paciente fue un japon\u00e9s de 60 a\u00f1os aquejado de degeneraci\u00f3n macular, un trastorno del envejecimiento que provoca visi\u00f3n borrosa y, a la larga, puede desembocar en ceguera. Para revertir el mal, el equipo m\u00e9dico le introdujo en la retina un grupo de c\u00e9lulas reprogramadas a partir de c\u00e9lulas cut\u00e1neas de un donante an\u00f3nimo.<\/p>\n<p>La reprogramaci\u00f3n es un proceso por el cual se transfieren genes de c\u00e9lulas madre a otras adultas. El resultado son unas c\u00e9lulas casi id\u00e9nticas a las embrionarias llamadas iPS, acr\u00f3nimo de &#8220;induced pluripotent stems&#8221; (&#8220;c\u00e9lulas madre pluripotenciales inducidas&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Hasta ahora esta terapia se realizaba con c\u00e9lulas del propio paciente. Pero eso, seg\u00fan los investigadores, no ofrece las suficientes garant\u00edas m\u00e9dicas. \u00bfEl motivo? Que las c\u00e9lulas de partida podr\u00edan contener los mismos defectos gen\u00e9ticos que las da\u00f1adas. Mejor, por tanto, reprogramar c\u00e9lulas de individuos j\u00f3venes y sanos.<\/p>\n<p>Es lo que han hecho los m\u00e9dicos de Kobe gracias a un permiso especial del Ministerio de Salud japon\u00e9s que les permite realizar cinco intervenciones experimentales. Si los ensayos salen como esperan, se abrir\u00e1 el camino a un nuevo modelo de medicina regenerativa, basado en las c\u00e9lulas iPS.<\/p>\n<p>Esta t\u00e9cnica ofrece varias ventajas respecto a las actuales modalidades de terapia celular. Para empezar, el paciente dispondr\u00eda de las c\u00e9lulas inmediatamente (se ahorrar\u00eda el proceso de tener que donar sus propias c\u00e9lulas para ser cultivadas y luego reprogramadas, un tiempo muy valioso en el caso de los pacientes aquejados de enfermedades degenerativas). Adem\u00e1s, ser\u00eda mucho m\u00e1s barato.<\/p>\n<p>El padre de la idea es el tambi\u00e9n japon\u00e9s Shin&#8217;ya Yamanaka, que obtuvo el Premio Nobel en 2012 precisamente por descubrir que las c\u00e9lulas adultas pueden reprogramarse en forma de iPS. Ahora, Yamanaka ha decidido montar el primer banco celular. Seg\u00fan sus c\u00e1lculos, con s\u00f3lo 10 donantes podr\u00e1 desarrollar c\u00e9lulas v\u00e1lidas para entre el 30% y el 50% de los japoneses.
