Cuando la tela es liberada se contrae y deforma la estructura, haciendo que se despliegue en una forma tridimensional compleja.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Los investigadores denominan estas creaciones \u2018Superficies Kirchhoff-Plateau\u2019, en referencia a las ra\u00edces f\u00edsicas y matem\u00e1ticas de este problema de dise\u00f1o que se remontan a finales del siglo XVIII. \u201cUsando nuestra herramienta de dise\u00f1o, la creaci\u00f3n de Superficies Kirchhoff-Plateau solo requiere una impresora 3D b\u00e1sica, un trozo de tela el\u00e1stica y apenas 20 minutos de tiempo\u201d, afirma Bernhard Thomaszewski, profesor asistente en la Universidad de Montreal y anteriormente investigador en Disney Research Zurich.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La idea original de este trabajo est\u00e1 basada en los dise\u00f1os conceptuales creados por el dise\u00f1ador suizo Christophe Guberan y sus compa\u00f1eros del Self-Assembly Lab en el Instituto Tecnol\u00f3gico de Massachusetts (MIT, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s), quienes en 2015 comenzaron a realizar experimentos con este proceso de fabricaci\u00f3n. \u201cDurante nuestras pruebas iniciales, nos dimos cuenta de que era incre\u00edblemente dif\u00edcil dise\u00f1ar manualmente estructuras planas que dieran lugar a formas 3D deseadas\u201d, explica Miguel Otaduy, profesor asociado de la URJC. \u201cPara crear dichas superficies una herramienta de dise\u00f1o deber\u00eda tener en cuenta el fen\u00f3meno f\u00edsico subyacente\u201d, a\u00f1ade el investigador.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNuestra ambici\u00f3n era la creaci\u00f3n de un software que hiciera accesible el dise\u00f1o de Superficies Kirchhoff-Plateau incluso a los usuarios menos experimentados\u201d, destaca Jes\u00fas P\u00e9rez, estudiante de doctorado en la URJC (Espa\u00f1a) y autor principal del art\u00edculo. \u201cPor esa raz\u00f3n, no era suficiente con predecir la forma en 3D para una estructura plana dada, sino que la herramienta ajustara autom\u00e1ticamente el dise\u00f1o, de forma que aproximara lo mejor posible una figura objetivo especificada por el usuario\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Para conseguir este objetivo, el equipo ha desarrollado un enfoque guiado por el usuario y asistido por computador que combina algoritmos de simulaci\u00f3n y optimizaci\u00f3n en una interfaz de dise\u00f1o flexible. Este hecho se ilustra con la variedad de prototipos f\u00edsicos que acompa\u00f1an a la publicaci\u00f3n que incluyen m\u00e1scaras, disfraces, veh\u00edculos conceptuales, o elementos decorativos
