El etileno se utiliza para fabricar polietileno,\u00a0el pl\u00e1stico m\u00e1s utilizado en la actualidad, cuya producci\u00f3n mundial anual ronda los 80 millones de toneladas. En el coraz\u00f3n de este trabajo est\u00e1 la reacci\u00f3n de reducci\u00f3n de di\u00f3xido de carbono, en donde el CO2 se convierte en otros qu\u00edmicos mediante el uso de una corriente el\u00e9ctrica y una reacci\u00f3n qu\u00edmica, ayudados por un catalizador. Muchos metales pueden servir como catalizadores en este tipo de reacci\u00f3n: el oro, la plata y el zinc pueden formar mon\u00f3xido de carbono, mientras que el esta\u00f1o y el paladio pueden formar formiato.\u00a0Pero solo el cobre puede producir etileno, el componente principal del pl\u00e1stico de polietileno.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;El cobre es un metal m\u00e1gico. Es m\u00e1gico porque puede producir muchos productos qu\u00edmicos diferentes, como metano, etileno y etanol, pero\u00a0controlar lo que produce es dif\u00edcil&#8221;, dice el estudiante Phil De Luna, l\u00edder del proyecto, basado en las prestaciones de la Canadian Light Source (CLS).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Creo que el futuro estar\u00e1 lleno de\u00a0tecnolog\u00edas que generan valor a partir de los residuos. Es emocionante porque estamos trabajando para desarrollar nuevas y sostenibles formas de satisfacer las demandas de energ\u00eda del futuro&#8221;, dice De Luna.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Una\u00a0pieza \u00fanica de equipo\u00a0desarrollada por el cient\u00edfico senior de CLS, Tom Regier, hizo posible que los investigadores estudiasen la morfolog\u00eda o forma y el entorno qu\u00edmico de su catalizador de cobre a lo largo de la reacci\u00f3n de reducci\u00f3n de CO2, en tiempo real.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p_middle_title\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nunca se hab\u00eda hecho antes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Esto nunca se ha hecho antes&#8221;, destaca el estudiante Rafael Quintero-Bermudez, el otro primer coautor del art\u00edculo. &#8220;Esta medici\u00f3n \u00fanica nos permiti\u00f3 explorar una gran cantidad de preguntas de investigaci\u00f3n sobre c\u00f3mo se lleva a cabo el proceso y c\u00f3mo se puede dise\u00f1ar para mejorar&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Al identificar las condiciones precisas que maximizan la producci\u00f3n de etileno durante la reacci\u00f3n, es posible dise\u00f1ar un catalizador para cumplir esas condiciones. Quintero-Bermudez y De Luna se acercaban al final de su tiempo de investigaci\u00f3n asignado en el CLS cuando llegaron los resultados clave. Despu\u00e9s de innumerables horas de trabajo y muchos intentos fallidos,\u00a0el experimento funcion\u00f3.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Est\u00e1bamos a punto de darnos por vencidos, pero cuando llegaron los resultados, fueron tan buenos que tuvimos que sentarnos. Resultados realmente hermosos&#8221;, dice Quintero-Berm\u00fadez.
