Un reciente estudio de la\u00a0Universidad McMaster<\/strong>\u00a0ha llamado la atenci\u00f3n por su an\u00e1lisis acerca del impacto de carbono que genera la industria de las tecnolog\u00edas de la informaci\u00f3n y comunicaci\u00f3n\u00a0(TIC)<\/strong>\u00a0que incluye la producci\u00f3n de computadoras port\u00e1tiles, monitores y smartphones. En el a\u00f1o 2007, esta industria gener\u00f3 tan s\u00f3lo el 1% de la huella de carbono a nivel mundial, sin embargo esta cifra se ha triplicado al d\u00eda de hoy, y las estimaciones hacia el futuro no son nada alentadoras, pues se predice que podr\u00eda alcanzar hasta el 14%\u00a0 para el a\u00f1o 2040, lo que significa la mitad de la huella de carbono que genera actualmente toda la industria del transporte.<\/p>\n

A pesar de que la tendencia es cambiar los dispositivos grandes por peque\u00f1os aparatos que consumen mucho menos energ\u00eda, el impacto ambiental continua empeorando. El problema radica en que los smartphones se han convertido en objetos casi desechables con un promedio de vida de dos a\u00f1os, mientras que entre el 85%\u00a0y 95% de las emisiones totales de CO2 que generara el dispositivo se da en los primeros 2 a\u00f1os debido a su fabricaci\u00f3n, y\u00a0especialmente a la extracci\u00f3n minera de los materiales que encontramos en su interior. Esto quiere decir, que comprar un nuevo smartphone consume tanta energ\u00eda como utilizar uno existente por toda una d\u00e9cada.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Los smartphones son actualmente el segmento de mayor crecimiento de las TIC, pero al d\u00eda de hoy, el mayor contaminante de esta industria son los servidores\u00a0 y centros de datos que se estima que representar\u00e1n el 45% de las emisiones de este segmento para el a\u00f1o 2020. Esto se debe a que cada vez que publicamos en facebook, mandamos un tweet o hacemos una b\u00fasqueda en google, se requiere una computadora en alguna parte del mundo que procese todo en la nube. Aqu\u00ed entra en escena nuevamente el uso desmedido de los smartphones y la creciente cantidad de aplicaciones que\u00a0funcionan utilizando estos servidores.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

A pesar de que la compra de nuevos dispositivos a disminuido\u00a0(muy poco)<\/em>\u00a0en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os y las compa\u00f1\u00edas est\u00e1n buscando la forma de tener servidores m\u00e1s sustentables y fomentar el reciclaje de dispositivos electr\u00f3nicos, los datos muestran que estamos muy lejos de lograr una producci\u00f3n sostenible\u00a0en este sector. La mejor opci\u00f3n que como usuarios podemos optar por ahora, es\u00a0pensar si realmente es necesario comprar un nuevo dispositivo, o podr\u00edamos ahorrar un poco de dinero y proteger el medio ambiente s\u00f3lo cambi\u00e1ndole la bater\u00eda y utiliz\u00e1ndolo unos a\u00f1os m\u00e1s.<\/p>\n
