Alcanz\u00f3 su fama a partir del libro de divulgaci\u00f3n\u00a0<em>Una breve historia del tiemp<\/em>\u00a8, y esta fue amplificada por las dif\u00edciles circunstancias desde las que hizo gran parte de su contribuci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica: desde una silla de ruedas y comunicado a trav\u00e9s de una m\u00e1quina que \u00e9l operaba con el movimiento de los ojos. Sin embargo, su legado matem\u00e1tico, de gran impacto en la comunidad cient\u00edfica, ha pasado m\u00e1s inadvertido para el p\u00fablico.<\/h4>\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Entre sus aportaciones destacan los teoremas sobre las llamadas\u00a0<em>singularidades<\/em>, en colaboraci\u00f3n con el f\u00edsico matem\u00e1tico Roger Penrose. A partir de estos trabajos, las singularidades pasaron a ser una parte integral de la teor\u00eda de la relatividad general. El concepto de\u00a0<em>singularidad<\/em>\u00a0es complejo y admite varias versiones. En los teoremas de Hawking, que el\u00a0espacio-tiempo\u00a0contenga una singularidad equivale a decir que es (geod\u00e9sicamente) incompleto. La geod\u00e9sica es la generalizaci\u00f3n del concepto de l\u00ednea recta para espacios curvos. Por ejemplo, en el caso de la superficie de una esfera, las geod\u00e9sicas son los segmentos de las circunferencias m\u00e1ximas. En el universo relativista, la luz sigue siempre trayectorias geod\u00e9sicas. Que el espacio-tiempo sea singular, quiere decir que al seguir la trayectoria de la luz, llega un momento en el que desaparece de forma abrupta.<\/h4>\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Los teoremas de Hawking y Penrose afirman que las singularidades aparecen de forma habitual tanto en cosmolog\u00eda, es decir, en la descripci\u00f3n del universo en su conjunto, como a la hora de describir objetos compactos como son las estrellas. En concreto, sus trabajos sirvieron para cimentar la teor\u00eda de los agujeros negros y del Big Bang, ambos ejemplos de singularidades. Las part\u00edculas que entran en un agujero negro desaparecen para nosotros, y algo parecido ocurre en el Big Bang, con el tiempo invertido: si seguimos una part\u00edcula yendo hacia al pasado, acerc\u00e1ndose a ese momento primigenio del universo, llega un momento en el que desaparece.<\/h4>\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Las ecuaciones que describen los agujeros negros y el Big Bang son consecuencia de la teor\u00eda de la relatividad general, que estaba respaldada desde el principio por experimentos; sin embargo, estas ideas fueron tratadas durante mucho tiempo como un invento de ciencia ficci\u00f3n. Las objeciones proven\u00edan, en parte, de su car\u00e1cter tan extra\u00f1o, contra intuitivo, que dificultaba imaginarlas: los agujeros negros son objetos que absorben cualquier cosa, incluso la luz; y el Big Bang establece que el universo estuvo contra\u00eddo a un tama\u00f1o much\u00edsimo m\u00e1s peque\u00f1o que el de una canica.<\/h4>\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Adem\u00e1s, algunos f\u00edsicos argumentaban que los modelos eran demasiado simples y, por lo tanto, poco realistas. Aseguraban que, si se partiese de condiciones m\u00e1s generales, se ver\u00eda que eran consecuencia de la simplificaci\u00f3n. Por ejemplo, para obtener las ecuaciones de los agujeros negros se impon\u00eda la hip\u00f3tesis de que fuesen objetos completamente esf\u00e9ricos, aunque esta perfecci\u00f3n no existe en la realidad. En el modelo cosmol\u00f3gico del Big Bang se part\u00eda de un universo homog\u00e9neo e is\u00f3tropo (igual en todas las direcciones), cosa que s\u00f3lo es cierta de forma aproximada.<\/h4>\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hawking y Penrose demostraron que no eran necesarias las hip\u00f3tesis de esfericidad u homogeneidad para obtener las singularidades, partiendo de hip\u00f3tesis f\u00edsicas razonables y utilizando argumentos muy generales. As\u00ed, qued\u00f3 demostrado y zanjado que las singularidades son reales, y no fruto de simplificaciones. Sin embargo los teoremas no explican otros aspectos insatisfactorios de la singularidad, por ejemplo, \u00bfqu\u00e9 pasa con la part\u00edcula que desaparece? \u00bfPor qu\u00e9 sucede esto? Una pregunta parecida es\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/deverdaddigital.com\/articulo\/21818\/el-enigma-de-la-entropia-del-cosmos\">\u00bfy qu\u00e9 ocurri\u00f3 antes del Big Bang?<\/a>\u00a0\u00bfTodo surge de la nada?
